Common Furnace Malfunctions

The only time you need your furnace is when the weather cold (or frigid!). At those times, the furnace may stop working at 1:00 am, you wake up with goosebumps, become desperate for warmth, and you don’t know how to troubleshoot the furnace problem. Common furnace problems can be fixed by the homeowner yet some may need the assistance of a professional. Read more about the most common furnace issues below!

Thermostat Malfunctions
A malfunctioning thermostat furnace fan that cannot be adjusted at any comfort levels.

Reduced Air Flow
This problem is easy to fix. If you cannot see through the furnace filter, you should replace the filter. Pay attention how the filter is put in place. A clogged filter causes reduced air flow, inefficient heating and may damage the limit switch that controls the fan.

No Heat
A defective thermostat, pilot light, no power or gas.

Lack of Maintenance with Multiple Problems
Requires annual inspections. Prevent problems by an HVAC contractor.

Normal Wear and Tear
trouble areas may be problems with airflow, overheating and problems with heat control.

Frequent Cycling
The furnace sounds that it is turning “On” and “Off”. Maybe due to poor airflow or thermostat setting or a clogged filter.

Pilot Control or Electronic Ignition Problems
Requires full inspection because different furnace defects can cause these problems.

Blower Keeps Running
Check the limit switch which may need replacing.

Noisy furnace
A mechanical problem which requires a full inspection. The noise may be due to issues with the fan caused by worn out fan bearings and should be replaced.

Quick Furnace Tips
